About the Summer Spiti Full Circuit

The whole loop, entered the proper way — up through Kinnaur via Shimla, out over Kunzum Pass to Manali. Eight days, one direction, no backtracking. Because you gain height slowly across the first four days, altitude sickness is far less likely on this route than on the short run up from Manali.

You get Sarahan and the Bhimakali temple, the Baspa valley at Sangla, Chitkul as the last inhabited village before the border, Kalpa under Kinner Kailash, the lake at Nako, the thousand-year-old monastery at Tabo, the cliff monastery at Dhankar, and two nights in Kaza as the base for Key, Kibber, Chicham, Hikkim, Komic and Langza.

Day by day

01Delhi to Shimla | Shimla Stay
  • Departure from Delhi by tempo traveller or private cab.
  • Drive up to Shimla, climbing out of the plains through Solan and the pine belt.
  • Evening arrival and hotel check-in.
  • Leisure time on Mall Road and the Ridge.
  • Overnight stay in Shimla.
02Shimla to Sangla via Sarahan | Sangla Stay
  • Early morning departure from Shimla.
  • Drive to Sarahan and visit the Bhimakali temple — a slate-and-timber tower in the Kath-Kuni style, and one of the 51 Shakti Peethas.
  • Continue into the Kinnaur valley towards Sangla, following the Sutlej before turning up the Baspa.
  • Arrival in Sangla and check-in.
  • Overnight stay in Sangla.
03Sangla to Kalpa via Chitkul | Kalpa Stay
  • After breakfast, drive up to Chitkul at 3,450 m — the last inhabited village on the old Indo-Tibetan road, and the end of the line for civilian traffic.
  • Time in the village and along the Baspa river.
  • Later drive to Kalpa, high above the Sutlej.
  • Visit Roghi village and Suicide Point, a sheer drop straight off the road with the valley laid out below.
  • Magnificent views of the Kinner Kailash range, best just after sunrise.
  • Overnight stay in Kalpa.
04Kalpa to Tabo via Nako | Tabo Stay
  • Breakfast and check out.
  • Cross from Kinnaur into Spiti — the greenery stops almost at a line and the cold desert begins.
  • Visit Nako lake and the old village of mud-brick houses around it, at 3,660 m.
  • Continue to Tabo.
  • Visit Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 CE and one of the oldest continuously functioning Buddhist establishments anywhere — plain mud walls outside, extraordinary murals within.
  • Evening at leisure. Overnight stay in Tabo.
05Tabo to Kaza via Dhankar | Kaza Stay
  • Breakfast and check out.
  • Drive to Dhankar Monastery and the old village, built onto a spur of crumbling rock roughly 300 m above the meeting of the Spiti and Pin rivers.
  • Panoramic views up and down the Spiti valley from the ridge.
  • Continue to Kaza, the valley’s main town.
  • Evening free to explore Kaza market. Overnight stay in Kaza.
06Kaza Sightseeing | Key, Kibber, Chicham, Hikkim, Komic & Langza
  • After breakfast, a full day out around Kaza.
  • Key Monastery, stacked in tiers up its hill and the largest in Spiti, then Kibber village above it.
  • Chicham Bridge, the highest suspension bridge in Asia, over a gorge nearly 150 m deep.
  • Hikkim, home to the world’s highest post office — send a card from 4,400 m.
  • Komic at 4,587 m, and Langza, where a Buddha looks out over fields full of marine fossils.
  • Return to Kaza. Overnight stay in Kaza.
07Kaza to Manali via Kunzum Pass & Atal Tunnel | Manali Stay
  • Early morning departure from Kaza.
  • Drive over Kunzum Pass at 4,590 m and down into the Lahaul valley.
  • En route, Chandratal lake if road access and timings permit — a crescent of meltwater at 4,300 m, and worth the detour when it is open.
  • Continue via Gramphoo and the Atal Tunnel to Manali.
  • Evening arrival and hotel check-in. Overnight stay in Manali.
08Manali to Delhi | Trip Ends
  • Breakfast at the hotel and check out.
  • Depart for Delhi, following the Beas down through Kullu and Mandi.
  • Drop in Delhi and the tour concludes.
