Chopta, Tungnath and Chandrashila: a good first Himalayan trek

22 July 20267 min read

If you want to find out whether you like Himalayan trekking without committing to a week, this is the one. It is short, the path is made, and the view at the top is out of proportion to the effort it takes to get there.

What the walk is actually like

LegDistanceGainTime
Chopta to Tungnathabout 3.5 kmroughly 2,680 m → 3,680 m2–3 hours
Tungnath to Chandrashilaabout 1.5 km3,680 m → about 4,000 m45–60 minutes
Back downabout 5 km2–3 hours

The path to Tungnath is paved in stone and used by pilgrims of every age. The last stretch to Chandrashila is rougher and steeper and is where most people notice the altitude — not because it is hard, but because it is 4,000 m.

Who it suits

Go up in the dark

The single best decision on this trek is starting for the summit before sunrise. From Chandrashila at dawn you see Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar Dome and Chaukhamba across the horizon. By ten in the morning cloud has usually come up the valley and the wall is gone.

When to go

SeasonWhat you get
March–JuneRhododendrons in bloom through the forest, clear mornings, snow patches early on
July–AugustMonsoon. Green, leeches, and the view mostly inside a cloud
September–NovemberThe clearest skies of the year. Cold at the top. The best window
December–FebruarySnow trek. Beautiful, harder, and the temple is closed

Tungnath temple itself shuts for winter — usually early November — and the deity moves down to Mukku. The walk stays open; the temple does not.

Questions people actually ask

How difficult is the Chandrashila trek?
Easy to moderate, and a genuine beginner route. About 3.5 km of stone path to Tungnath and 1.5 km rougher ground to the summit at roughly 4,000 m. No technical skill or equipment beyond good shoes is needed.
How long does the Chopta to Tungnath trek take?
Two to three hours up to Tungnath and another 45 to 60 minutes to Chandrashila. Allow two to three hours to come down, so five to seven hours of walking in total.
What is the best time for the Chopta Tungnath trek?
September to November for the clearest views, and March to June for the rhododendrons. Avoid July and August, when the monsoon puts the view inside a cloud.
Is Tungnath temple open all year?
No. It usually closes in early November for winter and reopens in April or May. The trekking route stays walkable in winter as a snow trek, but the temple itself is shut.
How high is Chandrashila?
About 4,000 m. Tungnath, just below it, sits at roughly 3,680 m and is the highest Shiva temple in the world.
